Freight Phantom Conversion

The Freight Phantom Conversion takes the iconic 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II and reimagines it as a no-nonsense urban box truck, engineered for practicality without sacrificing the unmistakable Rolls silhouette. Maintaining the signature roofline, window placement, and door count, this build transforms the rear into a sharply squared cargo box optimized for maximum capacity and durability. Track widths are widened front and rear to ensure stability under load, while the front fenders are subtly flared to accommodate heavy-duty wheels and cooling ducts integrated into the hood bulge, housing a torque-rich turbo V8 swap built for city hauling demands. This build’s suspension and drivetrain receive serious upgrades focused on load-bearing and reliability. Progressive-rate coil springs with reinforced wishbones up front and a robust multi-link solid axle in the rear raise the ride height and support the heavier payload. The reinforced transmission and re-geared final drive deliver strong low-end torque, paired with a high-capacity cooling system to withstand the rigors of stop-and-go urban freight transport. The matte platinum silver paint with gloss black accents and reflective safety decals rounds out a design that balances industrial function with the Silver Shadow’s timeless presence.

Technical Dossier // R005

Track

The track is significantly widened—160mm at the front and 280mm at the rear—to improve stability and handling when fully loaded. This functional wide track setup is complemented by carefully designed wheel arches and flares that accommodate larger commercial-grade wheels and tires without compromising clearance or urban maneuverability.

Body Modifications

Rear structure replaced with a fully enclosed rectangular cargo box extending 1450mm rearward and 1240mm above roofline
Front fenders extended 80mm with trapezoidal flares and integrated side air ducts
Rear wheel arches replaced with squared box wells integrated into cargo box sides
Widened front (+160mm) and rear (+280mm) track for stability under load

Aero Components

Flat 60mm extended front splitter for minor front-end stability and debris protection
Flush-mounted rectangular NACA ducts on hood bulge for turbo V8 intake cooling
Chamfered recessed channel transitions between sedan body and cargo box sides for aerodynamic smoothing

Aero

Aerodynamic interventions are minimal and pragmatic, focusing on low-speed urban efficiency and durability. The flat front splitter adds modest downforce and debris protection, while the hood’s NACA ducts provide efficient cooling airflow without disrupting the classic roofline. Recessed chamfered channels smooth airflow around the box cargo transition, balancing function with the vehicle’s distinctive silhouette.

Wheel and Tire Setup

Front: 19-inch steel commercial wheels with 245/70R19 all-season commercial tread tires
Rear: 19-inch steel wheels 10.5 inches wide fitted with 275/65R19 heavy-duty radial tires
Raised ride height by 40mm to accommodate larger tires and added weight

Wheels

Heavy-duty 19-inch steel commercial wheels are fitted front and rear, with narrower 245/70R19 tires upfront for steering precision and wider 275/65R19 load-rated radials at the rear for durability and traction. The tire selection balances low rolling resistance with the robustness required for urban delivery duties.

Stance

The suspension is upgraded with progressive-rate coil springs and reinforced double wishbones in front, paired with a multi-link solid axle at the rear to support the additional cargo weight. Ride height is increased by 40mm to ensure adequate clearance for larger tires and to maintain composure under load, imparting a confident yet functional stance.

Powertrain Concept

Turbocharged low-RPM V8 engine swap for enhanced torque delivery
Reinforced transaxle with upgraded 3.91 final drive ratio for load hauling
High-capacity front radiator and auxiliary oil coolers integrated into widened front fenders

Engine

The build features a turbocharged low-RPM V8 engine nestled beneath a raised hood bulge with integrated NACA ducts to ensure robust torque output essential for urban freight hauling. This powerplant prioritizes durability and consistent low-end grunt over high-rev horsepower, perfectly matched to the vehicle’s load-carrying role.

Drivetrain

Retaining the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, the drivetrain is fortified with a reinforced transaxle and a taller 3.91 final drive ratio to optimize torque delivery under heavy load conditions. Cooling is enhanced via a large front radiator and side air ducts to maintain operational reliability during frequent stop-start city driving.

Fabrication Notes

Cargo box side panels joined to sedan body via recessed 70mm wide chamfered channel for structural integrity
Tubular steel rear bumper mounted 420mm below cargo floor for loading dock clearance and durability
Removal of original rear diffuser replaced with flat protective skid plates extending behind rear wheels
