Backroad Brigade

2006 Scion xB

Platform 2006 Scion xB
Category Utility
Wave Wave 34

Backroad Brigade takes the 2006 Scion xB—an honest, square commuter box—and re-casts it as an Outback-minded gravel bruiser. The wide-track bodywork isn’t cosplay: 150mm-per-side flares and a raised 85mm ride height are there to clear real tire, real travel, and real steering angle without chewing the arches on compression. The look is blunt and purposeful, with rounded-triangle flare geometry, a deep-lip edge you can read in hard sun, and rock sliders that sit where the doors need protection most.

Up front, the extended fenders carry recessed lamp pods sized for auxiliary rally lamps, while the offset hood scoop and trailing heat vents acknowledge the reality of sustained load on hot, dusty roads. Out back, the hatch structure grows a bowed tubular overhang that earns its keep as a mounting point for roof cargo, a spare, and a high-mounted LED array—because in the bush, lighting and self-recovery matter more than a wing ever will.

Aero Package

No rear wing; tubular overhang integrates a high-mounted LED light array for visibility and dust
Offset 530x280mm hood scoop with forward-slant convex surface to feed cooler air under load
Trailing-edge hood heat extraction vents to reduce underhood pressure and heat soak
Mesh-guarded side radiator ducts (460x180mm) exhausting into the fender wells

Chassis

Shot on a rough Outback dirt track in harsh midday light, the xB reads like a compact rally support rig that got serious. Crisp shadows pick up the flare lips, the textured skid extension, and the flat plane of the sliders. The 38mm perspective and 1400mm camera height keep it honest—wide, tall, and planted in the dust.

Wheels & Tires

Method Race Wheels 17x9 for strength and brake clearance
315/70R17 LT all-terrain tires for sidewall compliance and puncture resistance
Raised ride height +85mm to keep belly and sills off rocks at full compression
Long-travel coilovers with progressive springs tuned for gravel stability

Powertrain

Stock front-mounted engine retained for serviceability
with improved thermal management
Side radiator ducting with mesh protection to maintain airflow in dust and debris
Rear-mounted auxiliary oil coolers with quarter-panel ducting for sustained high-load running
Calibration emphasis on midrange torque delivery and heat control over peak numbers

Fabrication Notes

Flares and lips shaped to preserve tire clearance at lock and full bump with wide LT rubber
Rock sliders tied into reinforced sills for real jacking and side-impact protection
Lamp pods recessed to protect housings while keeping beam height usable in dust
Tubular hatch overhang triangulated to carry spare/cargo loads without distorting the hatch skin
