The original platform.

Platform history

Volkswagen’s 1998–2010 New Beetle took the Type 1 silhouette and reinterpreted it for the modern era: a Mk4 Golf–based front-wheel-drive hatch wrapped in one of the most recognizable profiles in automotive culture. By the 2000 model year it had already become a time-capsule of late-’90s optimism—round, friendly, and instantly readable from a block away—yet underneath it’s pure mass-production VW, with everyday ergonomics, practical packaging, and the kind of parts commonality that keeps these cars alive.

As a platform, the New Beetle is all about contrasts: playful shape, serious OEM engineering. MacPherson struts up front, torsion-beam rear, compact dimensions, and a short overhang stance that photographs bigger than it is—especially in an industrial space where scale and light can exaggerate the curves. It’s a usable, approachable base car that sits at the intersection of nostalgia, Euro tuner history, and “daily-driver” reality.

One platform. 1 interpretation.
