Dune Commander

Series NPC Cars
Category Circuit
Platform 2017 Nissan Rogue
Era 2010s OEM+ / Instagram Era

The Dune Commander transforms the 2017 Nissan Rogue from a city commuter into a purpose-built Baja Trophy racer. Its widened fenders and lifted suspension accommodate massive BFGoodrich all-terrain tires and long-travel Fox shocks, delivering exceptional desert performance without sacrificing the Rogue’s recognizable silhouette. The build balances rugged utility with aggressive race-ready details, including a tubular steel brush guard and a carbon fiber rear clam-shell that replaces the stock hatch, emphasizing durability and functional weight savings for harsh off-road conditions. Under the hood, the turbocharged 2.5L engine is paired with a snorkel intake system designed for continuous operation in dusty environments. This powertrain setup prioritizes reliability and torque delivery essential for high-speed desert runs. The Dune Commander’s stance, aero, and suspension components work in harmony to create a credible trophy truck-inspired machine that blends crossover practicality with the extreme demands of unlimited class Baja competition.

Dune Commander blueprint

Technical Dossier // R004

Track

Conceptualized for unlimited class Baja Trophy racing, this build thrives on open desert landscapes filled with dunes, rocks, and washboard trails. Its suspension travel and durable underbody protection accommodate the brutal impacts of dune jumps and rough terrain, while the wide stance enhances high-speed cornering on loose surfaces.

Body Modifications

Extended fender flares adding 300mm width for wide track stance
Tubular steel brush guard integrated into front bumper
Carbon fiber rear clam-shell hatch replacing stock liftgate
Raised ride height with reinforced chassis bracing

Aero Components

Functional roof-mounted air intake snorkel
Front bumper with integrated skid plate and airflow vents
Rear clam-shell designed for aerodynamic dust management

Aero

Aerodynamics focus on functional airflow management rather than high-speed downforce. The front bumper integrates vents and a skid plate to direct air and protect vital components, while the roof-mounted snorkel ensures dust-free intake. The carbon fiber rear clam-shell aids in directing dust away from the rear and reduces weight, reinforcing the build’s purpose-driven design.

Wheel and Tire Setup

18-inch beadlock wheels
BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires sized for desert traction
Long-travel Fox suspension with reinforced control arms

Wheels

Mounted on 18-inch beadlock wheels, the Dune Commander’s BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires provide essential grip and puncture resistance. The beadlocks maintain tire integrity under extreme tire pressures, crucial for adapting to varying desert conditions and maintaining traction during aggressive maneuvers.

Stance

The stance is aggressively wide and lifted, with over 300mm added width to the track via extended fender flares. The elevated ride height and long-travel suspension create a commanding profile that balances aggressive off-road capability with the visual presence of a trophy-ready race machine.

Powertrain Concept

Turbocharged 2.5L inline-four engine with high-flow intake
Snorkel system for dust-proof air filtration
Upgraded cooling system for sustained desert performance

Engine

The Dune Commander’s heart is a turbocharged 2.5L inline-four, optimized for torque and reliability in harsh desert conditions. Its snorkel-fed intake ensures clean airflow over extended runs, while an upgraded cooling system maintains thermal stability during sustained high-speed operation. This engine setup strikes a balance between accessible tuning and rugged endurance.

Drivetrain

Paired with a reinforced transmission and limited-slip differentials, the drivetrain channels power efficiently to all four wheels. The long-travel Fox suspension and widened track improve traction and stability on uneven terrain, making the Dune Commander agile yet planted during high-speed desert runs.

Fabrication Notes

Custom tubular steel front brush guard fabricated for impact resistance
Carbon fiber rear clam-shell constructed to reduce weight and improve durability
Extended wheel arches welded and sealed for off-road debris protection
Suspension mounts reinforced with gussets for long-travel geometry
