Desert Talon Program

2017 Toyota RAV4

Desert Talon Program takes a 2017 RAV4—one of the most anonymous shapes on the freeway—and rebuilds it like it has to survive a thousand miles of heat, rocks, and sustained wide-open throttle. The visual is all function: a 270–290mm wider track wrapped in trapezoidal box flares, beadlocks and 33s stuffed under deep travel, and a front end that’s more skid plate than bumper.

Underneath the livery is the part enthusiasts care about: packaging and reliability. The 2.5 gets pushed back into a front-mid position for stability and reduced nose weight, cooling is split and ducted to keep temps steady in slow silt and fast desert, and the chassis is treated like a race car—sealed, braced, and built to take hits without turning the body into the structure.

2017 Toyota RAV4

The 2017 Toyota RAV4 marked a significant evolution in Toyota’s compact crossover lineup, combining rugged SUV capability with everyday practicality and reliability. Built on Toyota’s TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) GA-K platform, this RAV4 delivers a balanced chassis with sharp handling dynamics and improved structural rigidity. Its boxy yet aerodynamic design balances interior space optimization with modern styling cues, making it both a versatile family hauler and a capable partner for light off-road adventures.

Aero Package

280mm forward multi-plane front skid/splitter with 20° dive planes for stability and protection
Forward-facing fender aero channels feeding wheel-well evacuation and brake cooling
Raised hood spine with dual recessed intake ducts feeding engine/trans cooling air
300mm rear diffuser with four vertical strakes to reduce wake turbulence at speed

Chassis

Set up for desert straightaways and broken high-speed terrain: 350mm of travel front and rear on remote-reservoir coilovers, long-travel geometry, and a maximum compressed clearance around 250–260mm. The widened track is as much about stability at speed as it is about keeping the tires out of the body when the suspension is fully crossed up.

Wheels & Tires

Method Race Wheels beadlocks: 17x9.5 +15 front
17x10 rear in black anodized finish
330/85R17 BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR3 desert race tires
Reinforced hubs and extended track (approx. +270mm front
+290mm rear) for stability and scrub radius control
Clearanced arches and bump stops tuned for full compression with 33s under articulation

Powertrain

2.5L inline-4 repositioned ~270mm rearward for front-mid balance and reduced polar moment
Upgraded AWD with reinforced center/rear differentials and selectable locking capability
Dual high-capacity radiators mounted behind front wheel arches with ducted inlets/outlets
High-mounted side-exit exhaust ahead of rear wheels to protect routing and improve departure survivability

Fabrication Notes

Suspension towers and pickup points gusseted and tied into a substructure designed for repeated high-load cycles
Sealed inner fender liners and ducting to reduce silt ingestion into belts
electrics
and heat exchangers
Skid system in ultra-high-strength steel: nose protection plus extended rocker coverage
Service-first panel strategy: rivet/bond seams
accessible fasteners
and modular aero pieces for quick swaps

Part of
Wave 45

Mom’s Baja Battalion

We just took the suburban warrior vehicles you thought only hauled car seats and sports gear and transformed them into desert-assault monsters that could chew up dunes and spit out dust like they were born in the Baja 1000. These builds aren’t your run-of-the-mill off-road hacks; we’ve widened fenders till they scream, swapped suspension for rocket-ship long travel, and tricked out aerodynamics to keep these mom cars flying across the desert with tactical precision and savage style.
